Safety Information: When to Seek Urgent Care

For breastfeeding parents

Seek urgent medical care if you experience:

  • fever or chills

  • flu-like symptoms

  • rapidly worsening breast pain

  • red, hot or swollen areas of the breast

  • symptoms that do not improve within 12–24 hours

  • feeling faint, unwell or unsafe

These may indicate mastitis or other infections that require prompt medical assessment.

For babies

Seek urgent medical care if your baby:

  • is difficult to wake or unusually sleepy

  • has very few wet nappies

  • refuses multiple feeds in a row

  • has fast or laboured breathing

  • has a fever or low temperature

  • appears floppy, pale or distressed

  • or if you are concerned for any reason

If you are worried, trust your instincts and seek medical help.
